Touchwood is collaboration between several local café operators who were seeking a larger venue to expand the possibilities of their offering. The site’s previous use as a timber furniture showroom had left behind remarkable hardwood flooring and a clean open space with an abundance of natural light. Inserting the functions of a café within the pristine existing shell allowed the design to be conceived as a series of objects and furniture. Each object displays unique detailing in timber and steel, with a particular focus on flat bar steel profiles and local hardwood. Literal furniture pieces such as custom stools and communal tables are complimented with more architectural moves such as the addition of overhead beams – which allow lighting and planting to also be ‘inserted’ within the space.
